How do you organise pre-existing chaos?

Hiya all,

My hard drives are full of a mixture of crap and greatness. There are no folder naming standards, no "pictures" or "DVD" folders, no fancy lookups, none of the bells and whistles.

So, if anyone else has been in my amateur position, how did you organise your already existing data?
